• Ténis Portugal: España es considerada para muchos como un gran centro de desarollo de muchos jugadores profesionales de tenis en tierra batida pero tu actualmente tienes preferência jugar en otros tipos de courts. ¿Consideras que eso fue un paso hacia atras? ¿Nos podriás comentar como fue tu trayecto hasta llegar a ser un jugador professional?

Feliciano Lopez: Aunque existan muchos courts de tierra en España, yo empezé, en Madrid en cemento y fue apartir de ahí que cresci como jugador. Siempre me ha encantado jugar a un nivel más agresivo, y considero que mi estilo es muy similar en las diversas supercifies.

• Ténis Portugal: Tu tienes el record de 51 cuadros individuales en Majors. ¿Que importancia crees que tiene esta estabilidad para ti? ¿Y en tu opinion que representa esto?

Feliciano Lopez: Esto es sin duda uno de los logros más grandes y que tengo más orgullo. Sin duda que enseña consistencia, compromiso y resolusion. Toda mi trayectoria, siempre he trabajado muy duro para estar en forma y eso es lo que me permite, hasta el dia de hoy, competir con los mejores jugadores

• Ténis Portugal: Nosotros creemos que 2014 fue sin duda una epoca incredible para ti a nivel singular, sobretodo por los logros que has conseguido. ¿ Que ha cambiado en el Feliciano de 2013 al Feliciano de 2014?

Feliciano Lopez: La gran diferencia fue la consistencia que logré tener en 2014. En el pasado tenia mucha dificultad en mantener el mismo nivel durante tantas semanas. Y eso fue en lo que he intentado focalizar toda mi energia en 2014 y estoy muy orgulloso del resultado.

• Ténis Portugal: Una de las consecuencias del gran trabajo hecho en 2014 fue terminar el 14 en el Ranking ATP- el major de tu historia. ¿ Llegar a los 15 mejores del mundo era uno de tus sueños? ¿Hasta donde quieres llegar, y hasta donde crees que podrás llegar?

Feliciano Lopez: Mi objectivo para 2015 es mantenerme sano y competititvo, Si lo puedo lograr sé que hasta podré llegar al top 10. Es un sueño que tengo aunque se que es algo muy dificil. Yo haré lo mejor pero sobretodo quiero disfrutar del momento y de la competicion en los más altos niveles.

• Ténis Portugal: En la época pasada has logrado llegar a dos semi finales del Master 1000, que muchos jugadores describen como “ Uno de los momentos más dificiles de ganar porque en una semana los mejores del mundo se ven las caras” ¿ Ganar uno de estos torneos es tu “próximo gran objectivo”? ¿ Como analisas tu actitud en los Master 1000?

Feliciano Lopez: Masters 1000 son los mas duros porque son donde hay mas nível de performance por parte de todos los jugadores. Pero a la vez es para este tipo de torneos que vas entrenando. Tengo un muy bueno record en eventos grandes y jugando con jugadores del top 10, pero siento que puedo llegar a más.

• Ténis Portugal: El próximo año empezaremos en cesped la temporada( tanto a nivel de puntos como de semanas) ¿ En estos momentos de tu vida professional y teniendo en cuenta tu forma de jugar tenis, estas contento con los cambios? ¿ O crees que el tenis tiene que volver al pasado donde empezó y empezar otra vez a un nivel un poco más lento y confortable?

Feliciano Lopez: Yo creo que es un paso hacia una buena direccion. Tenis debe de ser jugado en diferentes superficies y tener una temporada para cada una de ellas. Courts de cesped son los preferidos de los que miran los partidos de tenis y me deja un gusto especial saber que tendremos mas semanas en cesped. Y espero tener una epoca 2015 increble.

• Ténis Portugal: El cambio de entrenador de la Copa Davis fue comentado alrededor del mundo. ¿ Para ti jugar por tu pais continua a ser una prioridad? ¿ Que nos puedes comentar sobre este tema?

Feliciano Lopez: La copa Davis y jugar por España es siempre una prioridad para mi desarollo. Tengo mucho orgullo en representar España hace más de 10 años y gañar 3 trofeos. Siempre hare mi mejor para competir por mi pais. Pero esta generacion ( Ferrer, Verdasco, y Rafa) tiene que empezar a dar la oportunidad a los jugadores nuevos que van saliendo. Mi edad y los horarios lo torna todo bastante mas complicdo, pero aún asi intentaré siempre representarlos.

• Ténis Portugal: Si tuvieras que hacer un analisis de la situacion española en estos momentos ¿Que opinion tendrias como se ve el tenis español? Teniendo en cuenta que en el circuito ATP hay varios cambios( Rafa y David que no han tenido un año perfecto pero aun asi han Ganado mucho) y en WTA, Garbine Muguruza pide mas atencion hacia ella.

Feliciano Lopez: Hemos tenido mucha suerte en tener en la misma generacion tan Buenos jugadores, que ni en un futuro cercano podrá volver a pasar. Espero que la federacion los ayude y que contruya una estrutura de nuevos jugadores estable porque ellos no necesitan. Las chicas estan sin la mejor duda haciendolo muy bien y creo que en uno futuro lo tendrán.

• Ténis Portugal: Pasando un poco de tema… ¿Si tuvieras la oportunidad de hacer una parceria para jugar un partido de tenis ( sea con una mujer o un hombre) a quien escogerias y porque?

Feliciano Lopez: Siempre he tenido la suerte de poder haber jugado con los mejores jugadores del mundo. Con Fernando Verdasco siempre hemos tenido muy Buenos resultados. Me gustan los partidos de pares porque estas jugando con alguien que tiene la misma passion que tu, asi que lo haria con cualcuiera que tuviera ganas de hacerlo.

• Ténis Portugal: Bueno…. Sabemos que tu apodo es “Deliciano” y que tienes muchos seguidores por todo el mundo, ¿Que opinas del tema y de tus seguidores? ¿ Es de verdad emocionante tener tanta gente apoyandote?

Feliciano Lopez: Yo estoy bastante agradecido a mis seguidores. Es muy bueno saber que detras tuyo hay gente que me sigue porque le gusta mi forma de jugar y mi personalidad, pero si es muy muy agradable, y algo que me hace sentir muy confortable.

• Ténis Portugal: En Mayo, Lisboa ha estado llena de “los Blancos” celebrando “la Decima” aqui en Portugal. Porque lo que hemos escuchado tienes una debilidad por el futbol y sobretodo por el Real Madrid. ¿Has tenido la oportunidad de mirar un partido de la liga Portuguesa,y eres de alguma forma conocedor del nuestro futbol?

Feliciano Lopez: Me encanta el futbol. Y obviamente eso hace que siga la liga portuguesa. En la época de Eusébio, Portugal ténia muy Buenos jugadores y despues de el pues Futre, Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Porto, Benfica y Sporting van ganando las ligas alternadas, mezclando con el camibio de estilo de juego.

• Ténis Portugal: Para terminar…. ¿ Que objectivos tienes para 2015? ¿ Que quieres lograr?

Feliciano Lopez: Ser aun mas competitivo, y llegar a los partidos mas importantes y a mi primer semi final en un Grand Slam o mejor!

• Ténis Portugal: ¿ Jugador mas dificil de jugar? Feliciano Lopez: Roger Federer.

• Ténis Portugal: ¿Mejor logro en tu etapa como jugador de tenis? Feliciano Lopez: Del Porto en la final de la copa Davd en Argentina nos dio lo que para mi fue la oportunidad de ganar nuestra primera y por ahora única final fuera de casa.

• Ténis Portugal: ¿Cual es tu torneo de sueño? Feliciano Lopez: Wimbledon Centre Court.

• Ténis Portugal: ¿En tu opinion quien es la jugadora mas guapa de circuito WTA? Feliciano Lopez: Hay muchas! Pero y porque soy educado voy apenas mencionar a Andrea Petkovic, que para mi es la mas divertida!

INTERVIEW (english)

• Ténis Portugal: Spain is seen as a great practice and preparation centre for clay court players but you actually prefer playing in faster surfaces. Was that a setback? Can you tell us a little bit about your evolution as a tennis player until you became professional?

Feliciano Lopez: Although there are many more clay courts in Spain, I started playing tennis on hard courts in Madrid and therefore build up my game around that. I always enjoyed playing agressively so I kept my game plan pretty much on all surfaces.

• Ténis Portugal: You hold the spanish record of 51 straight main draw appearances in Majors. How important is this consistency for you and in your opinion what does it show?

Feliciano Lopez: This is one of the achievements that I am most proud of, definitely. I think it shows consistency, commitment and resolution. Throughout my career I worked really hard to stay in best shape and the result is that I have been fortunate to be atle to compete among the elite for such long time.

• Ténis Portugal: We would risk to call 2014 your best season in the singles competition due to all the personal records broken. What changed from the 2013’s Feliciano to the one in 2014?

Feliciano Lopez: The biggest change for accomplishing my best career ranking was definitely achieving more consistency. In the past I found difficult to maintain the same level for so many consecutive weeks, so this was a goal for 2014 and I am glad it paid off.

• Ténis Portugal: One of the consequences of this season was ending in the 14th place of ATP rankings – your best career ranking. Breaking the top-15 was one of your big goals? How far do you hope and want to go?

Feliciano Lopez: My goal for 2015 is to stay healthy and competitive. If I am able to do so, I believe I may have a chance to compete for reaching top10. It is very difficult but certainly a dream of mine. I will do my best but above any ranking number I want to enjoy the competition and perform well at the big events.

• Ténis Portugal: In the end of the season you reached two semifinals in Masters 1000 events, tournaments that many players describe as ‘some of the toughest to win because all the best players face each other in just one week’. Winning one of these events is the ‘next big step’ to take on your career? How do analyse your journey in the Masters 1000?

Feliciano Lopez: Masters 1000 are tough because the level is very high from round 1, but at the same time this is what you train for. Fortunately I have a pretty good record at the bigger events and against the top players, so I am always looking forward to tough match-ups.

• Ténis Portugal: Next year will feature a bigger grass court season (in weeks and points). At this moment of your career and attending your game style, are you happy with that change? Do you feel like tennis needs a little travel back to where it started or are you comfortable with slower courts?

Feliciano Lopez: I think it is a step in the right direction. Tennis should be played on different surfaces and have a season for each. Grass court play it is very exciting for the fans as it is a game that requires skills, strenght and tactics. I am very much in favour of adding extra weeks on grass and I am looking forward to having another great season in 2015.

• Ténis Portugal: The changes in the command of the Spanish Davis Cup team were talked a little bit around the world. Defending your country’s colours is still a priority for you? What can you tell us about it?

Feliciano Lopez: Davis Cup and playing for my country has always been a priority throughout my career. I am very proud to have represented Spain for over 10 years and to have won the trophy 3 times. I will always do my best to compete for Spain, however I think my generation (Ferrer, Verdasco, even Rafa) should hand it over to the youngsters progressively as the should be leading the team. The schedule and my age makes it really tough to still make it a prioritt for me but will always try to add to the cause whenever possible.

• Ténis Portugal: How are you seeing the spanish tennis at the moment? If in the ATP circuit we could see some kind of a contrast (Rafa and David didn’t have such a great year while you achieved milestones in your carreer), in the WTA, Garbine Muguruza is drawing more attentions to herself…

Feliciano Lopez: We have been very lucky to have such a great generation of tennis players that I think at some point in the near future it will be almost impossible to match it. I hope the Federation will build a structure for the future generations and support them because the will need it. The girls are no doubt doing well and hopefully they will also be able to shine in the future.

• Ténis Portugal: Skiping the rules… If you could form a partnership for a tennis game with any tennis player (men or women), who would you choose and why?

Feliciano Lopez: I have been fortunate to play with great players alongsite. With Fernando Verdasco I had some good results. I like the doubles game and anyone who shares the same passion as me and that can serv, volley and return would be good to play with!

• Ténis Portugal: Well… You’re well knowed by the nickname ‘Deliciano’ and you have a very special fan club all around the world. What are your thoughts on these comments and followers? Do you enjoy having so many people supporting you?

Feliciano Lopez: I appreciate all the support from my fans. It is very nice to know they are behing you. Some comments obviously make more headlines but at the end of the day I believe the fans engane with me because they like my game and personality, so that’s very much appreciated.

• Ténis Portugal: In May, Lisbon was filled with ‘Los Blancos’, who turned out to celebrate ‘Lá Décima’ here in Portugal. From what we heard, you have a special affection with football and Real Madrid. Have you ever had the chance of seeing any Portuguese team play? Are you familiar with our football?

Feliciano Lopez: I am very much in to football so of course I follow also portuguese teams. There is a lot of history back grom the days of Eusébio. Portugal had so many great footballers after him, like Futre, Figo, Crisiano. Benfica, Porto and Sporting have dominated the domestic championship over the years and I like the offensive style of play of their teams.

• Ténis Portugal: To finish, have you set your goals for 2015 season? What would you like to achieve?

Feliciano Lopez: To be competitive at all big events and hopefully reach my first semis at a Grand Slam or better!

• Ténis Portugal: Toughest player you have ever faced? Feliciano Lopez: Roger Federer.

• Ténis Portugal: Best win of your carreer? Feliciano Lopez: [Juan Martin] Del Potro at the Davis Cup final in Argentina, perhaps. It gave us the chance to win our first and only final away from home to date.

• Ténis Portugal: Your favourite tournament/court? Feliciano Lopez: Wimbledon Centre Court.

• Ténis Portugal: Can you tell us who’s the prettiest WTA player? Feliciano Lopez: There are a few but to be a gentleman I will only tell you the funniest: Andrea Petkovic.
